Battledome

A brief Introduction to the Battledome

The Neopets Battledome is where you can pit your Neopet against other players, or one-player opponents. It may take a little practice before you get the hang of it, but it can be a very enjoyable part of the site if you get into it.

First off, make sure you train your Neopet. You can raise most of their abilities at the Mystery Island Training School or Cap'n Threelegs' Swashbuckling Academy. Courses in the Training School require you to buy codestones to train (look at the name of the codestone and make sure you get the exact one he wants), while the Pirate Academy requires you to buy a dubloon (once again, look at the type of dubloon he wants for your level of pet). The Training School takes less time, but is typically more expensive. The Pirate academy takes longer, but is typically cheaper. Also, if you want to train your hitpoints, make sure to pick "endurance" (this question comes up a lot for those who are new). The only stat you can't raise at these two places (aside from height and weight) is intelligence, to do that, simply read books to your pets.
Well, now you know where to train your pet, but just what do these stats do? Here is a brief explanation:
  • Level (lv): this is your pet's current level. Unlike in many other games with levels, leveling up does not guarantee you will gain stats. Instead, it allows you to train your stats higher at the Training School or Pirate Academy. You can only train your stats to double your level, except intelligence, which can be anything you want it to be. You can also get faerie abilities or more pet abilities at higher levels. (See our faerie abilities and species abilities sections to learn more about those.)
  • Hitpoints (hp): these are your pet's health. If your opponent lowers them to zero, you lose. You must have at least 1 hp to battle.
  • Strength (str): this is your pet's attacking strength. It influences the amount of damage you deal in your attacks. (See our strength boosts section to find out more about it.)
  • Defense (def): this is your pet's defensive strength. Some weapons that defend against attacks can block more if you have a higher defense.
  • Agility (agi): this is how quickly your pet moves. The only real use it has is that a select few weapons will do more effects if you have a certain agility. Only really worry about it if you are planning on being a serious battler, because the weapons that use this stat are really expensive.
  • Intelligence (int): this is how smart your pet is. It has limited uses, just like agility, only it has a different set of weapons (which are also really expensive). Don't worry about this one either.

Ok, now that you know how to get a strong pet, you must know a little about equipment. You have to use equipped items to win almost all of your battles, or you are sure to lose (unless you just want to smack Inflatable Balthazar!) There are many types of things you can equip to your Neopet, including shields that can block damage, weapons that can deal damage, one-use items that can really hurt your opponent, and potions that can heal you. It is good to choose a balanced mix of these, so you can use them if you need to. You can use two equipped items at a time in battle.
Here is a cheap set that I would reccomend that beginners should start with:
  • Scarab Ring: a cheap and reliable weapon for its price range, and it even blocks a little damage. I reccomend getting two. (1,300-1,500np)
  • Slime Potion: this may sound gross, but it heals your pet 10hp during a battle. You can only equip one at a time, though. (1,300-1,500np)
  • Mud Mixture: this handy potion is double duty, it heals a little while dealing damage to your opponent. The only drawback is that you can use it only once per battle. I'd reccomend having two or three (20-100np)
  • Sticky Snowball: this snowball is very powerful, but can only be used once, then it's gone! It can give you the extra power you need to win, though. It wouldn't hurt to have one or two around. (300-400np)
All of these are easy to earn the neopoints for, and should give you a good introduction to battles. Once you get the hang of it, then you might want to look at our weapons articles to help you find something a little more powerful.

After learning this, you should be able to get through a few challenges, but it doesn't end here. Check our other Battledome sections to learn more about other aspects of battle, such as abilities. Good luck, and happy battling!
